How and why &#8220;eastern&#8221; monarchs choose specific peaks within the oyamel fir forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt are still largely unknown. These choices likely involve navigation mechanisms that are unique among insects. We are combining novel miniaturized tracking electronics and machine learning methods with next-generation sequencing and imaging approaches to understand individual-level behaviors during migration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">This work is an ongoing collaboration with <a aria-label=\"David Blaauw (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blaauw.engin.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Blaauw<\/a> (UM EECS), <a aria-label=\"Hun-Seok Kim (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/kim.engin.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hun-Seok Kim<\/a> (UM EECS) and <a aria-label=\"Inhee Lee (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engineering.pitt.edu\/InHeeLee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inhee Lee<\/a> (U Pittsburgh ECE).
